A working Arduino or breadboard prototype proves your idea; it is not yet a product you can manufacture, sell and support. Turning it into one means redesigning the electronics as a custom PCB, writing production firmware, adding an enclosure, and preparing files a factory can build from. For most products this takes a few weeks to a few months.
TechieYan Technologies is a PCB design and electronics development company in Hyderabad. Taking prototypes to manufacturable products is one of our most common projects. Here is the real path.
Why an Arduino prototype is not production-ready
An Arduino or Raspberry Pi prototype is perfect for proving behaviour. But it is usually too large and too expensive per unit, draws more power than needed, has no proper protection or enclosure, and cannot be certified or mass-produced as-is. A product needs a purpose-built board and firmware that handles real-world edge cases.
The steps from prototype to product
1. Review and fixed-scope plan
We study your prototype, parts list and what the device must do, then give a fixed-scope proposal with milestones — so cost and timeline are clear before work starts.
2. Schematic and custom PCB design
The circuit is redrawn as a proper schematic with power management, protection and the right connectors, then laid out as a 2-layer to multilayer custom PCB with attention to EMI, thermal and (where needed) RF.
3. Production firmware
Arduino sketches are ported to robust embedded firmware on an MCU such as STM32, ESP32 or nRF52, with drivers, an RTOS where appropriate, a bootloader and over-the-air (OTA) updates.
4. Enclosure and industrial design
A 3D-printed or CNC enclosure is designed around the board for prototypes, with user-facing details handled as part of product engineering.
5. Prototype build and bring-up
We coordinate fabrication and assembly, then bring up and test each board, fixing issues in the next spin until it is reliable.
6. Design for manufacturing and certification
Finally we optimise the bill of materials with alternates, add test points and jigs, prepare CE/FCC/BIS pre-compliance, and hand over Gerbers, BOM, firmware and test procedures your contract manufacturer can use directly.
How long does it take?
A simple board can reach a first prototype in a few weeks; a product with wireless connectivity, an app and certification takes a few months and one or two PCB spins. The exact timeline is fixed in the proposal before starting.
What it costs — and what you own
Cost depends on board complexity, whether firmware and an app are included, the number of prototype spins, and certification needs. Whatever the scope, you receive and own every schematic, layout file, Gerber, the sourced BOM and the firmware source code. We work under NDA. See real builds on our projects page, including an electric utility vehicle and the Pillora smart pill dispenser.

Frequently asked questions
Can you turn my Arduino prototype into a real product?
Yes. We redesign the circuit as a custom PCB with proper power, protection and connectors, port the firmware, add an enclosure and prepare it for manufacturing.
How long does it take?
A simple board can reach a first prototype in a few weeks; a connected product with an app and certification takes a few months and one or two PCB spins.
Do you handle PCB fabrication and assembly?
We coordinate fabrication and assembly with trusted partners, then bring up and test the boards in our Hyderabad lab, and hand over production files your contract manufacturer can use.
Can you redesign an obsolete board instead?
Yes. We reverse-engineer existing boards, replace discontinued parts with available ones and keep the same fit and function where possible.
Who owns the design files and code?
You do. Schematics, PCB and Gerber files, the BOM and firmware source are all handed over, under NDA.
